3rd grade Community Circle.

Community Circle kicked off with a dance party to Taio Cruz "Dynamite". All Voyage Community Circles begin with a dance party.

Once everybody was seated our 3rd grade introduced the community "norms" and January's design principle which is....

"Diversity and Inclusion"
In Expeditionary Learning schools, students investigate and
value their different histories and talents as well as those of
other communities and cultures. Schools and learning groups
are heterogeneous.

Our 3rd grade made a fingerprint painting of the earth, showing that individually they are all different but together they can create a masterpiece.

Community Circle is a great time for students to have the opportunity to speak to a large audience and present their ideas to others. Our students do most of the speaking, not our teachers. We've been impressed with how confidently they have handled this task.

Next awards were given to Vikings that have displayed Diversity and Inclusion.
Principal Phillips and Mrs. Fort won an award for always showing love and kindness to everybody.
Bailey, Brylee, Lauren, and Lydia won an award for including everyone in their class birthday celebration.

Things got wild with the DINO STOMP!

Our 3rd grade then presented their expedition on "Force and Motion" To show this, Principal Phillips was called up to sit on a teeter totter and the question was asked,  "how many Vikings does it take to lift Principal Phillips?"

The answer is THREE!

No Community Circle is complete without our Cheer Crew bringing Viking pride to it.

It was an AWESOME Community Circle!
Well done 3rd grade!!!

4th grade Community Circle

Our 4th grade hosted our Community Circle this morning.
This months Design Principle is "Diversity and Inclusion."

The Community Circle kicked off with a dance party and then a Cheer from our Cheer Crew.

The 4th grade students performed a skit based on Dr. Seuss book Star belly Sneetches

The Sneetches is about two types of creatures, separated by having or not having stars on their bellies. The Star-Belly Sneetches think they are the best, and look down upon Sneetches without stars. The Plain-Belly Sneetches remain depressed and oppressed, prohibited from associating with their star-bellied counterparts, until Sylvester McMonkey McBean comes along with his Star-on and Star-off machines. He begins to give stars to the Plain-Belly Sneetches, and soon they are happy, for they look like their elite counterparts. The original Star-Belly Sneetches are angry at no longer being different and special, so they get Sylvester to remove all their stars. This continues back and forth until no one can remember which Sneetches were originally what, and an epiphany strikes them all at once: that it really doesn’t matter whether a Sneetch has a star belly or not - they are all really the same, and can coexist and be friends with one another.

The lesson behind the story is that we should not discriminate based on looks, or other things. We should do our best to include and love everyone despite our differences.
You can watch the skit HERE

Awards were then given to Mrs. Maki, Mrs. Pobieglo, and Mrs. Coleman. The three of them are great at practicing "Diversity and Inclusion." They all care for each student, regardless of any differences they have, and really make an extra effort to include everyone. We love these ladies!!!

The 4th graders then presented their Railroad expedition and what they have learned.

A few things students learned about the railroad:
That it created jobs.
That the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met in Promontory point Utah.
That the railroad brought people to Ogden.
The railroad influenced the economy in Ogden and surrounding cities, and still continues to do so today with frontrunner.

You can hear the song the 4th graders sang, while showing a slide show of the Railroad,
HERE

If you attended today's Community Circle you may have wondered what was going on with the Justin Beiber cutout with Mrs. Call's head attached to it. Mrs. Call was sad she couldn't make it for the Community Circle due to a family emergency. To help her feel included her students brought this cutout of her instead.
We have some very creative Vikings!

The meeting ended with the entire school singing
 "Roar" by Katy Perry.
Katy Perry wrote this song to tell others about how she finally chose to stand up to bullies she faced when she was younger.
You can here Voyage students sing the song HERE

It was an AMAZING Community Circle and we're so proud of our 4th graders and all the hard work they did in putting it together.

Happy National Custodial Day Mr. Maki!

This is our thanks to you
for all our messes you undo
Just when stuff looks the worst...
your the one who gets here first!

We Love you Mr. Maki!
Thanks for keeping our school looking so fantastic!

Astro Camp

In December our 5th graders had the opportunity to attend Astro Camp!

Astro Camp is a program held at Odyssey Elementary in Ogden. The program facilitators have built a “space ship” that resembles one that NASA would launch; obviously not as high tech, but still amazing! It has a lot of buttons, switches, keyboards, and screens. Each student had a head set ($1000 each!) that allowed them to communicate with one another to press the proper keys, push the correct buttons, and fix any problems that occurred. The goal is to “launch” the space ship within 45 minutes. Each student plays an essential role in launching the ship. They must read their part in an elaborate script at the proper time. If they missed their part, points were taken away. Every one of our 5th grade crews were able to launch within the 45 minutes! The students had so much fun! Most said it was the most stressful, and most fun field work experience yet!

Regional EL Directors visit Voyage Academy

Yesterday we were honored to have Regional Expeditionary Learning Directors visit our school. They came to see all the great things Voyage has accomplished in it's first year of operation. We were happy to have them with us! Our student council gave them a tour of our school. These kids do such a great job at this. They really know their stuff and reflect the pride they have in their school!
